Excavation & Backfill Specs
Cover and Clearance Requirements

Trenches shall be dug and inspected by the Company Representative prior to the arrival of the installation crew

Gas mains shall be installed with a minimum of 36" of cover, measured as follows:
-
Off of the traveled portion of the roadway when the section is at a lower elevation than the traveled way - from the top of the pipe to the top of the trench using the shallow side of the trench for measurement

In the traveled portion of the roadway - from the top of the pipe to the top of the trench using the shallow side of the trench for measurement

Off of the traveled portion of the roadway when the section is at a higher elevation than the traveled way - from the top of the pipe to the gutter line

Gas service lines will have a minimum of 24" of cover in the street and a minimum of 18" of cover on private property

Measurements for cover requirements will be taken from the existing grade. (It is the responsibility of the customer to maintain these cover requirements with any future grade changes which may occur)

Vertical Clearance: The pipe shall have a minimum vertical clearance of 12" from other underground utilities

Horizontal Clearance:
-
New Streets - Gas mains are installed with a minimum of five feet of horizontal clearance between the main piping and any other underground structure

Existing Streets - Mains are installed with a minimum of two feet of horizontal clearance between the proposed excavated trench wall and other utilities

Rock Excavation: The ledge shall be removed to a depth of 6" below the standard trench depth, unless otherwise specified. The bottom shall be free of protruding boulders or ledge

Exceptions to these cover and clearance requirements must have prior approval by the appropriate Company Representative
