On January 25, 2002, Unitil filed a comprehensive electric restructuring proposal with the Public Utilities Commission designed to implement the New Hampshire Restructuring Law and provide all of our customers with the right to choose their own electric energy supply if they wish. The proposal will result in the restructuring of our current power supply contracts, the combination of our two distribution companies into one and the recalculation of all rates and charges to our customers. The Commission will investigate the elements of the proposal in the coming months. If approved, the changes would take place by the end of the year.
The proposed changes will provide a number of benefits to Unitil customers. First, Unitil will provide customers with a Transition Service energy supply for three years at fixed prices with a modest annual inflation. This Service will significantly reduce the risk of price volatility such as you experienced over the past two years, and will provide a firm benchmark against which to compare competitive supply offers. Second, by combining its different companies and updating its rates, Unitil will remain as efficient as possible and will be able to provide better and more responsive service. Finally, even after restructuring, Unitil will continue to provide total electric rates that are the lowest or among the lowest in New England.
