Unitil has always been committed to providing safe, reliable electric service in an environmentally responsible manner, as well as a safe work environment for our employees. Unitil developed an EMF policy in response to customer concerns. The purpose of this policy is to ensure a consistent approach in responding to electric and magnetic field inquiries by defining the company's position and responsibilities and providing informational materials. This policy is reviewed on an annual basis to make certain the information is up to date.
Unitil's Position
It is Unitil's position that the current scientific evidence and research findings do not support a conclusion that EMF poses a health hazard. However, it is clear that the subject of possible effects of EMF exposure is a very complex and technical issue. Experts from the science and health fields agree that additional research is needed to determine the existence of health risks, the magnitude of any such risks, and what protective actions might be appropriate in our homes and workplaces. In the mean time, Unitil will continue to:
- Design, construct and operate our facilities in compliance with applicable engineering and safety standards;
- Upon request, perform magnetic field measurements at customers homes to demonstrate relative strengths from many sources;
- Strive to promote understanding of the issue by providing our customers and employees timely, relevant and balanced information;
- Monitor scientific research and developments as part of our ongoing commitment to provide safe and reliable electric service.
