About Basic Service
All customers not receiving generation service from competitive suppliers will be on Basic Service.
The availability of Basic Service ensures that no one will ever be without a
supplier of electricity. To provide Basic Service, Unitil must solicit bids from
market suppliers and then enter into a contract to purchase electricity from one
or more of these suppliers. The price Unitil pays for electricity reflects current
market pricing.
Over time, market prices change, depending upon a number of factors,
including the supply and demand for electricity. These prices fluctuate similar
to the ways home heating oil, gasoline, and some grocery prices fluctuate.
Basic Service customers have two pricing options, fixed and monthly variable.
