Q: What are electric and magnetic fields and are they harmful? A: Electric and magnetic fields are invisible fields of force created by electric voltage (electric fields) and by electric current (magnetic fields). Wherever there is a flow of electricity, both electric and magnetic fields are present. As stated above, there is no conclusive evidence that EMFs produce a health hazard. Electric fields exist when appliances are plugged in. Magnetic fields exist when appliances are turned on. Q: Are there safe levels or standards for EMF? A: There has been a great deal of study work completed on the affects of EMF in the United States. The studies indicate that there is no basis for setting health standards related to safe levels for EMF. Q: How is the level of EMFs affected by distance? A: EMFs are higher the closer they are measured to their source. In fact, EMF levels are greater next to an appliance and almost disappear at distances of 3-5 feet. This is one reason why home appliances may produce higher levels of EMFs in a house as opposed to a power line that may be nearby. Q: What do the EMF Measurements Mean? A: There is no conclusive evidence that EMFs produce a health hazard. Exposure to EMFs changes from moment to moment because the fields are always changing. EMFs can be measured and a relative comparison done at various locations. This will measure the strength of the field at that point in time. Q: Should I attempt to limit my exposure to EMFs? A: Until we have definite answers about possible health risks from EMFs, some people suggest that public agencies and individuals take sensible action to reduce EMF exposure. This means limiting exposure that can easily and inexpensively avoided. Deciding what action to take about EMFs requires an individual to gather information, weigh the potential risks, and do what makes sense to you. Q: What can I do to limit my exposure to EMFs? A: EMF studies have not scientifically shown a need to change the way that people use electric appliances or equipment. However, if you are concerned, you can take the following steps to reduce your EMF exposure. The best way to limit your EMF exposure at home is to become more aware of where EMFs are created. Information and common sense are your best tools for reducing EMF exposure.
